Deschamps' joke about “the cat's companion”

Didier Deschamps, coach of the team, was amused by the supposed luck he enjoys with the Blues, Sunday after the victory in Italy (1-3) in the Nations League.

A little joke to end an exhausting year. Didier Deschamps joked about his supposed luck on the bench of the France team after the victory in Italy (1-3), Sunday in the Nations League. On TF1 at the end of the match, “DD” was asked to react to his technical gesture made during the match when he emerged from his bench to control a ball that had gone out of bounds. “He stood up like a cat to control this ball, there are still remains,” the journalist pointed out to him, referring to his past as a player.

“The cat is someone I know well”

The coach, never shy of a little joke, then took the opportunity to have fun with a label that is often stuck to him. “The cat is someone I know well,” he said, with a smirk. “Well, especially his partner apparently. She was here again this evening so it's okay.”

Since his appointment on the Blues bench in 2012, Deschamps is often associated with the expression “the pussy of DD” for the help he would benefit from in certain match or draw scenarios. A joke that he takes rather lightly, as he confided last June in an interview with Le Figaro.

“No, it doesn’t bother me at all,” he said. “It has never annoyed me. It can be pejorative, or sum up my action and that of my staff as just luck. I start from the principle that once, this can happen with luck and chance, when this is repeated, there is less probability. I take this with derision and humor, I am a lodger too, we have to accept (…) As long as she accompanies me for a long time (laughs).”

Under his leadership, the French team won a World Cup in 2018, a Nations League in 2021 and played in a Euro 2016 final and another at the 2022 World Cup. Sunday evening, the Blues snatched first place in their group in the League of Nations by winning in Italy (1-3) after turbulent weeks the retirement of Antoine Griezmann, controversies around the absence of Kylian Mbappé and a tasteless game.
