In Cherbourg, intensive breeding in the sights of L214 activists

THE militants of theCherbourg antenna L214 were mobilized Friday November 15, 2024 in front of the entrance to theOcteville Intermarché.

In Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche), as in 24 other French citiesthe members of this animal defense association denounced the practices of intensive chicken farming practiced by the LDC group.

“They have the means to change”

In the middle of a discussion, L214 is trying to convince this French food manufacturer specializing in the processing and marketing of poultry to respect the criteria of the European Chicken Commitment and to change its practices which supply the Le Gaulois, Marie and Maître CoQ brands. After winning their case with fast food chains Burger King and Subway, they hope to be heard again.

Symbolically, and in five large supermarkets in Cherbourg, the activists returned the trays to the shelves, before raising awareness among the customers of this Intermarché.

“At the end of the morning, in France, our objective of 100,000 trays was already reached. »

Surprised but understanding customers

By reporting each reversal via an application, other activists located at the foot of the head office in Sablé-sur-Sarthe wanted to show the leaders of the LDC group that there were many of them supporting their action and deploring this form of breeding which aims to maximize yield while minimizing costs. “They have the means to change that, without changing prices for consumers,” believes the young woman.

The Octevillais customers were surprised, understanding and sometimes ignorant. Yannick, a Cherbourg resident who came to do his shopping, said “why not” to this action. “Especially when we see that we are going to import even more meat from Brazil,” laments the sixty-year-old, referring to the new trade liberalization agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries – Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay – which arouses the anger of the agricultural world.
