Where do these green parakeets that we see in and Île-de- come from?

In the region, passers-by and local residents can sometimes be surprised to come across green parakeets which stand out in the landscape of the capital and its suburbs. But why do we see these exotic birds in Paris and Île-de-? It all started with an incident at airport.

HAS Paris, pigeons and sparrows are legion. But sometimes, during our walks, we can be surprised to see much more birds exotic pass over our heads. Of the green parakeets more precisely ring-necked parakeets recognizable by their green plumage, their black collar and their red beak. For some local residents, these exotic species are even an ordeal, particularly because of the noise pollution they cause.

But how do these exotic birdsoriginating from Africa and Asia, did they swap the tropical forests for the capital? At the origin of this phenomenon which can be observed both Paris that in suburban towns, an incident occurring in Orly airport in the 70s. Yes, you understood, these parakeets took the plane to come here! They apparently escaped during a transfer in 1976 and have since adapted to the climate and proliferated to the point that they can today be observed throughout Île-de-France.

Their population is estimated to be between 10,000 and 20,000 individuals and the species is considered invasive. They are even found in other European cities. Now, the next time you come across a theft of ring-necked parakeets in the Paris regionyou will know the why and the how!
