The Aveyron prefecture took a shock measure this Wednesday, November 13. Non-lethal ammunition firing (blank bullets) is now authorized to scare griffon vultures in 102 municipalities in the department in order to “respond to the growing concerns of breeders”depending on the prefecture.

This decree follows attacks by vultures on Aveyron livestock. Over the past four years, 170 interactions between these raptors and cattle were recorded in the Lévezou and Aubrac sectors. Enough to arouse concern among breeders, who have been calling for stricter management of the species for months.

But, according to Samuel Maymard, general secretary of the FDSEA Aveyron agricultural union, scare shots cannot be a lasting solution: “That will allow us to better manage our herds but it will not change the number of vultures. There is no regulation.”

Agricultural unions have been on a roll since the attack of a vulture on a resident of Verrières (Aveyron) at the end of September. At 86 years old, Liliane experienced a horror scene when she was attacked directly in her garden by a bird of prey. She was injured in her hands, arms and ankle.

Faced with the proliferation of the species in the department, Samuel Maymard wants to use strong tactics: “It’s hard to say, but we have to eliminate vultures.”
