“Storms, floods… the damage from climate change strike many farms and territories every year, in an increasingly violent and frequent manner,” notes the Peasant Confederation. One year later the Ciaran storm, which had caused great damage in Finistère, around twenty of its members mobilized on November 5 in front of the Groupama agency in Morlaix.

“A disaster”

“Certainly, the calamity regime was imperfect,” says Thomas Gibert. “But it at least had the quality of being universal.” And the national secretary of the Peasant Confederation, in charge of the file of agricultural insurance to denounce the new regime. “The insurance reform supported by the FNSEA is a disaster “. Thus, beekeeping and diversified market gardening “were forgotten”.

Contracts for all productions

The Peasant Confederation therefore demands that insurance contracts can be offered to all farmerswhatever their production. “And we would like these contracts to be made transparently, so that we can judge their effectiveness.

The union also demands collective bargaining of these contracts. And with no response from private insurers for months, he decided to bang his fist on the table last week, by blocking the Groupama agency from Morlaix at midday and by affixing stickers to the front. “We ended up getting a meeting within two weeks with the national person responsible for the file.”

“The situation is exactly the same with the other insurer in the agricultural world, Pacifica,” denounces Thomas Gibert. “But as it depends on a bank, Crédit Agricole, we did not want to take the risk of blur the message ».

Financed upstream and downstream

But in the longer term, this insurance system does not suit the Peasant Confederation. “We are campaigning for the establishment of a mutual and solidarity fund in the face of climate risks,” explains the union. “There is no reason for farmers to be the only ones to finance it,” adds Thomas Gibert. “Climate risk concerns the entire sector: the fund must therefore also be abounded by the actors of upstream and downstream from agriculture to mass distribution.
