Tourism. Granville museums close in an exceptional year

The museums of the town of Granville, in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel (Manche), have closed their doors for the winter of 2024. The management draws up a positive assessment for this year 2024, described as “singular”, due to the events national events such as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Christian Dior Museum

77,248 visitors passed through the doors of the Les Rhumbs villa, the childhood home of Christian Dior, between April 6 and November 3, 2024, “a record for the Granville museum”.

Management explains this unprecedented result. “The increase is explained by an early opening, at the start of the spring break, for the first time in the history of the museum. This benefited the first holidaymakers of the season while meeting the expectations of tourism professionals, including the intercommunal tourist office which seeks to promote seasonal wings, outside of July and August. These two months, traditionally the busiest, experienced an unprecedented drop in the territory linked to the multiplicity of events at the national level. The drop was offset by a better distribution of visitors over the entire season, particularly school groups. The activities offered by the museum: workshops, guided walks (new for 2024) attracted a variety of audiences.

The next exhibition is scheduled for April 2025.

Attendance there is stable compared to 2023 with 2,610 visitors in July and August, “not counting the many curious people who only discovered the garden of the work and the exhibition Gens de Granville – les artistes, supported by the culture department and communication of the city”, specifies the museums service.

Richard Anacreon Museum of Modern Art

The MamRA closed its doors on Sunday November 10 with 13,271 visitors, after a year which started well from February to June with a slight increase in the number of visitors of 3%.

“It was from July until the closure in November that attendance suddenly fell.” Attendance is down 14% compared to 2023, a figure equal to 2022. “This decline is also observed among accommodation providers and restaurateurs”. The management of Granville museums is delighted with the increase in Granville educational establishments, by 9% in 2024.

Work at MamRA

From November 12, 2024, the teams were hard at work dismantling the temporary exhibitions, but also the permanent collections. “Floor repair work will take place throughout the winter, forcing the teams to remove all the works to place them safely. Contrary to usual and due to this exceptional work, the MamRA will reopen its doors in mid-March 2025.”
