Paris – A great friend and connoisseur of Morocco, which he considers his country of heart, Hubert Seillan, lawyer and law professor, has just published the first volume of his new book “Communauté de destines” with “La Croisée des Chemins” .
This collective work, directed by Me Seillan, which brings together the contributions of a wide range of Moroccan and French writers, sociologists, jurists and experts, underlines the exceptional nature of relations between Morocco and France which are today experiencing great intended to promote the renewed partnership, sealed between the two countries during the recent state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the Kingdom, at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
In this interview with MAP, Hubert Seillan brings the reader closer to this new work and relates, through a well-researched history, some of the highlights of the centuries-old Morocco-France relationship.
Question 1: You have just published volume I of a new book to which you have chosen an evocative title “Community of Destiny”. Can you tell us more?
The decision that was taken to write this book with the help of a host of authors is part of the guiding principle behind the creation, almost ten years ago, of the France-Morocco Peace and Sustainable Development Foundation. that I preside over.
This foundation is shared between French and Moroccans around the idea of a community of destinies. And so this title does not come from chance. The book has an even broader ambition, because it is only the first volume of a collection called “Écrits en shared”, which is a long-term project in which we are involved.
Question 2: Can you bring readers closer to this work?
The work brings together contributions from authors from various backgrounds, French and Moroccan, who each brought their unique perspective on the historical, cultural and human links between the two countries.
These links are not from today. We must not believe that they are linked simply to the episode of the protectorate of 1912. They existed well before and in each of the books that I was able to write, notably on the Moroccan Sahara, then on the relations between Lyautey and the Sultan Moulay Youssef I showed that our two countries, at the time of our former monarchy, but very far away, had exchanges.
The episode well known to all of the great Sultan Moulay Ismail and Louis XIV should not hide all the other relationships of another nature and all the treaties that we have entered into.
The particularity of this book is that its ambition is that we cross points of view from both sides of our borders and this is the reason why I divided it into chapters. There is a chapter of history, another on the democratic vitality of Morocco with all the reforms undertaken. There are also international relations, culture and development.
Question 3: What is your view on the future of Moroccan-French relations?
On the occasion of the state visit of President Emmanuel Macron to Morocco at the invitation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the two countries decided to seal an even more solid and lasting partnership which will allow them to meet the challenges of the future in an approach of solidarity and mutual understanding.
Morocco and France have always been close and share common values. We are carried by this cultural and emotional proximity, by the historical forces that animate us. This is the community of destinies which governs the spirit of this new book.
