The Île-de- region cuts aid of 1.5 million euros to firefighters

This Friday, November 15, the Île-de- region announced the end of non-mandatory aid allocated to Ile-de-France firefighters as part of the “Safety Shield”. The opposition denounces a “pure and simple abandonment of the firefighters”.

The firefighters will have to do without help from the region. The permanent commission of the Île-de-France region recorded, this Friday, November 15, the cessation of aid to Ile-de-France firefighters, as part of the “Safety Shield”. The planned amounts were not incurred by the firefighters.

Since 2020, the region has concluded an agreement with the Fire Brigade (BSPP) and the Ile-de-France departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS). It made it possible to finance 46 new emergency and fire vehicles. The aid, a non-obligatory competence for the region, was to represent an amount of 1.5 million euros.

“You are in the process of recording, in one line in a report, the pure and simple abandonment of the firefighters,” denounced Julie Garnier, the regional advisor of the LFI-A group.

“You are eliminating aid, which was paid to them of more than 1.5 million, euros in one go. It is total cynicism, because it is not a question of saving money as you are saying everywhere on the sets, it is to transfer it to video surveillance cameras, which have never demonstrated their effectiveness as much as that of the firefighters. she added.

707 beneficiary municipalities, 46 new vehicles…

While the Ile-de-France region has experienced several episodes of flooding in recent months, particularly in Seine-et-, the opposition representative recalls: “Who was there during the floods on the front line? It's them. Who are there every time to save? It's always them. We can't let this abandonment pass in such a simple way.

Julie Garnier is alert: “The problem is the galloping artificialization that you are supporting. It is also the destruction of public services that you are supporting.” An observation which was not shared by Valérie Pécresse, the president of the region.

“We are the only region in France to help the firefighters. We need many more politicians like me, to make the decision to help the firefighters even though it is a departmental responsibility. We love the firefighters and that is that’s why we are the only region to help them,” she assured.

“I am sensitive to your argument because you support part of the Security Shield and this is the first time,” assured Frédéric Péchenard, the former director general of the national police and vice-president of the region in charge of safety and assistance to victims. In the absence of projects planned by the firefighters, the region decided to reallocate this sum to the “safety shield”.

The region recalls that the security shield benefited 707 municipalities, or 90% of the population. “We made this choice to help the firefighters. This is an agreement signed in 2020 and which ends in 2024. It has allowed us to provide exceptional aid of more than 6 million euros. financed 46 new emergency and fire vehicles, tablets, geolocation software, security equipment.

And to specify that this convention “fell in 2024. And the essential security shield is preserved for the municipalities”, he assures in the standing committee this Friday.
