Almost all of the residents evacuated from Brienz (GR) will be housed in the immediate surroundings. Several trucks were mobilized on Friday to evacuate the mountain village threatened by a landslide.

Most of the residents affected by the evacuation themselves sought a solution for rehousing, Christian Gartmann, spokesperson for the municipality of Albula (GR), of which Brienz is a part, told the Keystone agency on Friday. ATS. Those who contacted the municipality received help in finding accommodation.

Brienz must be completely evacuated by Sunday at 1:00 p.m. A check will then be carried out to ensure that no one is in the danger zone, explains Christian Gartmann. After this period, it will be forbidden to enter the village, probably for several months.

The animals from the two farms in the village are also moved. On Friday, members of the 11th Tank Sapper Battalion helped transport fodder for the evacuated animals into military trucks. The military assistance was provided at the request of the civil authorities, the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sports (DDPS) reported on the X platform.

Measuring instruments

Using helicopters, specialists installed new measuring instruments on Friday in the alluvial cone on the mountain slope above the village. The sliding speed of the rock mass can thus be monitored very precisely.

Up to 1.2 million cubic meters of rock threaten to fall on the village which has around 80 inhabitants. This rock mass could bury Brienz.

For residents, this is the second evacuation in a year and a half. They had already had to leave their homes in May 2023. On the night of June 16, 2023, 1.2 million cubic meters of rock broke away from the mountain. The mass of rocks stopped just before the village. Residents were able to return home at the beginning of July.
