Mauritanian arrested for burning down his old apartment in Lormont

An arson attack in Lormont after an eviction

A 21-year-old man, a Mauritanian national, was arrested Wednesday by the national police after more than a month of investigation. He is accused of having deliberately set fire to his former apartment, located rue Henri-Dunant in Lormont, a town near Bordeaux. The facts date back to October 5, a few days after his eviction from his accommodation.

According to our sources, confirmed by Sud Ouest, the suspect acted out of revenge against his former owner, who had him evicted. Two new tenants were in the apartment at the time, which added to the seriousness of the situation.

Revenge by fire

In police custody, the young man admitted the facts. Furious at having had to leave his accommodation, he allegedly set fire to a shopping cart filled with plastic in front of the new occupants' door. Fortunately, the rapid intervention of the emergency services made it possible to contain the fire, which did not cause serious injuries or destroy the apartment. However, the fumes released disturbed several residents of the building, caused a lot of commotion and damaged the hall.

From assassination attempt to willful degradation

Initially opened for “attempted assassination”, the investigation was finally reclassified as “damage to the property of others by a means dangerous to people”. Referred to the prosecution on Thursday, the suspect was placed in pre-trial detention pending trial.

This incident highlights the tensions that can arise following expulsions and the seriousness of the consequences when an act of revenge endangers human lives. The case is now in the hands of the courts.
