Where do the richest live in the Lyon Metropolis? Which municipality has the richest residents?
The Observatory of Inequalities published in June 2024 a new edition of its report on the rich in France. Based on data from INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), it draws up an assessment of the wealthiest inhabitants and their profile in the country.
Based on the latest figures from INSEE and the data in this report, we can deduce the wealthiest municipalities according to the income of its inhabitants. For example, in Paris, it takes 6,000 euros per month after taxes for a single person to be in the richest 10% locally. This threshold reaches 12,400 euros in the 7th arrondissement and almost 22,000 euros in the “Gros caillou” district, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or in the lead
To draw up its table, the Observatory of Inequalities relied on the median standard of living of the inhabitants of each municipality, the standard of living which divides the population in two: those who earn less, those who earn more. This is the disposable income for the equivalent of a single person.
In the Rhône department, it is the town of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or in western Lyon which comes at the top of the towns with the most wealthy residents. The minimum standard of living for the richest 10% in the municipality is 8,320 euros of income per month.
Unsurprisingly, the wealth is concentrated in the west of the Metropolis of Lyon with Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d’Or, Limonest, Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or then Charbonnières-les-Bains in the ranking.
In Lyon, it is the 6th arrondissement which has the most wealthy residents. The minimum standard of living for the richest 10% is around 5,700 euros of monthly income.

At the end of the ranking, it is Saint-Fons which is last with 1,407 euros of median income for its inhabitants, then Vaulx-en-Velin, Vénissieux, Givors and Tarare which are in the bottom five of the table.
