Notre-Dame de Lorette church in Saint-Michel-de-Lapujade benefits from major consolidation work. The miraculous spring, at the heart of a medieval legend, today threatens the building. Between support and restoration, a vast project, under the aegis of La Heritage Foundation and the Mission Bernis committed to preserving this heritage treasure of South Gironde.
A miraculous fountain at the heart of history
Known beyond the borders of Gironde for its miraculous fountain, Notre-Dame de Lorette churchbears an ancient legend: in 1150, a Marian apparition reportedly took place, attracting the attention of Eleanor of Aquitaine, who had a chapel built around this source. Every hour, 500 liters of water emerge from the fountain, of which 440 liters seep into the church's basement, dangerously damaging its foundations. This constant flow has become a threat to the structure of the building, causing cracks and a worrying tilt.
An ambitious heritage preservation project
To stabilize the building, a retaining project began in September and involves the installation of four micropiles per pillar on the south facade.at a depth of 15 to 20 meters. This first phase of work should be completed in December, but a second phase is already planned. This will include interior restorations: renovation of the chapel's facings, restoration of the tiles, treatment of humidity, and restoration of the ribbed vaults and the bell chamber. A major challenge to protect this Gironde treasure.
