Saint-Siffrein Fair, a tradition since 1525
The Saint-Siffrein Fair draws its roots from the rich history of Carpentras and Comtat Venaissin. Created in 1525 by Pope Clement VII, then sovereign of the Comtat, it bears the name of the bishop of Carpentras Saint-Siffrein and testifies to the commercial vocation of the town. Over the centuries, the fair has established itself as a leading commercial and festive event. Each edition perpetuates this centuries-old tradition in the first frosts of winter.
Originally, it was a religious festival punctuated by processions and songs dedicated to Saint-Siffrein. The faithful flocked from the four corners of the Comtat, hoping to receive the protection of the saint against epidemics and other calamities.
