A second outbreak of the disease detected in a duck farm in Landes. A week after the identification of a first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the commune of Saint-Étienne d'Orthe, a second outbreak of the disease was revealed on November 13 in the same commune, also on a duck farm.
These animals had been vaccinated against HPAI, in accordance with regulations. To prevent the spread of the virus, a euthanasia operation for the 6,000 animals present on the farm is being implemented from November 14.
State services, and in particular staff from the Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP), have been mobilized alongside the breeder since the outbreak was declared. They are notably present on site as part of the depopulation operation. An epidemiological investigation is currently being carried out by the DDETSPP services, to determine in particular whether epidemiological links exist between the two outbreaks.
The prefectural decree of November 7, 2024 determining a regulated perimeter around the first outbreak remains applicable, without modification:
-a protection zone, within a 3 km radius of the first outbreak, concerns 8 Landes municipalities,
-a surveillance zone, within a 10 km radius of this outbreak, concerns 20 Landes municipalities.
In these zones, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to specific requirements. Movements of poultry and other captive birds, and any introduction of new animals of this type, are prohibited, unless an exemption is granted by State services.
HPAI surveillance is also reinforced by carrying out self-checks made compulsory by prefectural decree.
In this context, the prefect renews her call for strict compliance, by each actor in the sector, with all biosecurity and surveillance measures falling under their responsibility. These measures complement the protection provided by the vaccination system deployed on farms since October 2023. They aim primarily to prevent the introduction of the virus from wildlife and through human activities.
In the event of introduction, they make it possible to limit its diffusion within sectors exposed to significant consequences in terms of economics and food sovereignty. The same recommendations apply to individuals who keep backyard and ornamental birds.

The identification of a second outbreak in the Landes comes in a context of a very recent rise in the level of epizootic risk: since November 9, this has been raised to its maximum across the entire metropolitan territory, due to notably a strong and persistent dynamic of the circulation of the virus in wildlife in Europe, particularly migratory ones in the migration corridors crossing France. Finally, the prefect particularly wishes to emphasize that the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs – and more generally of any food product based on poultry meat – presents no risk to human health.
