As part of the modernization of its military arsenal, Morocco is preparing to integrate the Bayraktar Akıncı combat drone, a strategic acquisition from the Turkish manufacturer of unmanned aircraft, Baykar. Delivery of these cutting-edge drones is scheduled for February 2025, marking a new stage in strengthening the capabilities of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR). The Akıncı, recognized for its advanced characteristics and its great versatility, will expand the Moroccan arsenal, already equipped with Bayraktar TB2 drones acquired in 2021.
The Bayraktar Akıncı, classified in the HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) drone category, stands out for its ability to execute long-duration and high-altitude missions. With a wingspan of 20 meters and a length of 12.2 meters, the Akıncı is powered by two turboprop engines of 225 horsepower each, allowing it to reach an operational altitude of 12,200 meters. Designed to fly for 24 hours straight, this drone has increased autonomy and endurance, making it particularly suitable for extended surveillance missions and precision strikes.
Carrying capacity and operational flexibility
The Bayraktar Akıncı surpasses the TB2 model in terms of payload and weapons capacity. With a payload capacity of up to 1,500 kg, split between internal and external loads, the Akıncı can carry a range of sophisticated weaponry, including air-to-ground missiles, guided bombs and air-to-air missiles. This flexibility allows it to carry out various missions, ranging from strategic surveillance to aerial combat for enhanced protection.

The Akıncı is equipped with cutting-edge sensor systems and advanced artificial intelligence, allowing it to process data in real time to optimize strike accuracy. This latest generation navigation and communication system also ensures maximum efficiency in conflict zones, offering the FAR a significant advantage in terms of national security and border protection.
A strategic acquisition for a modernized defense
The arrival of the Akıncı reflects Morocco’s ambitious military strategy, which strengthens its deterrence potential in a constantly evolving regional context. By integrating this new generation drone, the FAR increases its precision strike and surveillance capabilities and diversifies tactical options to meet contemporary defense challenges. In 2021, the Kingdom had already acquired 19 Bayraktar TB2 drones, now in service, in order to ensure increased security coverage in sensitive areas.
This approach demonstrates Morocco’s desire to maintain technological and operational superiority in the region, relying on cutting-edge equipment to face potential threats. The Akıncı drone, with its ability to operate autonomously and execute joint missions with fighter aircraft, thus strengthens the agility and responsiveness of the FAR.
