Well known to all Gardois, the Jean-Baptiste Dumas public high school in Alès (Gard) is today at the heart of a lively controversy. In a recent anonymous letter, teachers draw the alarm bell and report acts of violence more and more frequent.
The representative of the rectorate assures that “the situation is under control”, and that “corrective measures are taken when necessary”.
Lack of support
The high school's educational staff recently alerted the rectorate about the situation within this educational establishment. Teachers particularly deplore “a cruel lack of listening and support from their hierarchy”, in a long anonymous letter sent to the Free Midday several days ago, which we were able to consult.
The author of the missive specifies that he prefers “to express himself anonymously, because he is not no longer possible to express oneself publicly in our high school.
Teachers make a list of “ recent attacks » committed around the high school as well as during certain sports classes.
They remind their management that on Monday May 13, a Gard student, aged 19 ans and student in a BTS class in the public establishment was sentenced to six months in prison for acts of “provocation of terrorism”.
Solicited by various regional media, the principal of the Gard establishment prefers keep silent and recalls that he “never responds to an anonymous letter”.
Getting started
The response came from the Gard Academy Inspection.
Requested by Actu.fr, Christophe Mauny, Academic Director of the National Education Services of Gard (Dasen) wants to “put things in context following this anonymous letter”.
“In this emblematic establishment of the Alesian territory, we have management with competent people. The principal informs us of the major events that occur there. Things are well taken care of by the staff in place,” immediately states the departmental head of National Education.
Numerous disciplinary councils
“We are more than ever supporting the team in place”, assures the Gard Dasen who specifies that “each fact reported to the Inspectorate is taken and analyzed with vigilance”.
Daily life within the immense Gard establishment (more than 2,200 students to date, editor’s note) does not, however, seem to be a long, quiet river. Several major events have taken place there in recent months.
“We are here to educate before punishing but when it is necessary to take action, the decisions are made. The management on site is not clearly not lax», asserts the representative of the Rector, Sophie Béjean, throughout Gard.
Keen to reinforce his point with precise figures, the manager concludes his remarks by recalling that “during the 2023/2024 school year, thirteen disciplinary councils were organized with severe decisions taken.Four morehave already taken place since September 2024, since the start of the year 2024/2025”.
