November 25 in history

This celebration of the international day has its origins in the assassination on November 25, 1960, in the Dominican Republic, of the Mirabal sisters on the orders of the dictator and head of state, Rafael Trujillo, after they had suffered violence, within from their family or outside the family circle (rape, beatings and sexual harassment), and violence committed by the State (torture, rape of women incarcerated for political reasons).

In resolution 54/134 of December 17, 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The UN invites governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to organize actions on this day to raise awareness of the problem of violence against women.

Why this day?

  • Violence against women is a violation of human rights.
  • Violence against women results from discrimination against women, both in law and in practice, as well as the persistence of inequalities between men and women.
  • Violence against women has serious consequences and can prevent progress in certain areas, such as the eradication of poverty, the fight against HIV/AIDS and peace and security.
  • Violence against women and girls is not inevitable and its prevention is not only possible but essential.
  • Violence against women is a global problem. Up to 70% of women are victims of violence during their lives.
