In less than a week, avian flu is making headlines again in the Landes. After a first case detected on Thursday, November 7 in a farm in Saint-Étienne-d'Orthe, it is again in this commune that a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was noted, still in a duck breeding.
Euthanasia of 6,000 animals
The Landes prefecture indicates that the animals in this second case had been vaccinated against HPAI, “in accordance with regulations”. However, to prevent any risk of spreading the virus, “a euthanasia operation for the 6,000 animals present in breeding is implemented this Thursday” add the State services.
An epidemiological investigation is currently being carried out by the DDETSPP services, to determine whether epidemiological links exist between the two outbreaks.
Concerning the measures to counter this new case, they do not change, compared to those which were put in place a week ago, namely a protection zone within a radius of 3 km from the first outbreak and a surveillance zone within a radius of 10 km around the outbreak.

The introduction of new animals is prohibited
In these areas, all places of keeping poultry and captive birds is subject to specific requirements indicates the prefecture. All movements of poultry and other captive birds, and any introduction of new animals of this type, are prohibited, unless an exemption is granted by State services. Finally, HPAI surveillance is further strengthened by the carrying out self-checks made compulsory by prefectural decree.
As a reminder, on November 8, 2024, France raised the risk level linked to avian flu from “moderate” to “high”. A decision which saw the (re)confinement of all web-footed animals.
