Floods: Morocco launched “an exceptional logistics operation in response to a request from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior,” says Karima Benyaich

The Moroccan ambassador to Madrid, Karima Benyaich, expressed her solidarity with the victims of the floods which left 215 dead in Valencia, and proposed “all the support needed” to the Spanish authorities. She also announced that nearly 70 Moroccan agents arrived this Wednesday in the disaster areas in order to collaborate “closely” with the Spanish teams.

The ambassador recalled, in comments cited by the Europa Press agency, that King Mohammed VI had addressed “a message of condolences and support” to the Spanish sovereigns, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, as well as to the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. In this message, the Moroccan sovereign expressed “all the solidarity of Morocco in these painful circumstances.”

Karima Benyaich clarified that, in response to a request from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, Morocco launched “an exceptional logistical operation”, mobilizing 24 trucks equipped with suction pumps as well as 70 Moroccan agents, arriving this Wednesday at 10 a.m. (Spanish time) at the port of Motril.

According to information provided by the embassy, these specialized teams “will work with Spanish services in the badly affected Valencia region to contribute to clean-up operations and provide support to affected communities.” “The support provided by Morocco demonstrates the firm desire to support Spain in this difficult ordeal”underlined the ambassador, adding that this gesture also reflects “the solidarity that unites the two nations.” She noted that the Moroccan community residing in Spain, itself affected by this tragedy with seven dead and eight missing, “mobilized in a surge of solidarity and compassion towards the affected populations.”

Finally, Karima Benyaich highlighted that this act of solidarity constitutes “a natural response to the valuable aid provided by Spain when Morocco was hit by the earthquake of September 2023, which caused more than 2,900 victims.”

“In times of trial, like those we have gone through together, the depth of the bonds that unite us is revealed, not only through history and geographic proximity, but also through the shared values of compassion and support”she declared, before concluding: “I am convinced that Spain will overcome this ordeal with strength and resilience. Morocco will remain alongside Spain, a neighboring and friendly country, strengthening the fraternity which constitutes our common base of values and solidarity.
