Duty of memory: Finistère organizes the journey of the flame of memory

How to perpetuate the duty of memory and honor those who fell for . ? The department of Finistère, in conjunction with the prefecture and the Armed Forces, has decided to organize a “trail of the flame of memory” at the end of November, announced the department and the prefecture in a press release on Wednesday November 13.

Create cohesion

This journey, which echoes that of the Olympic flame, will begin on November 22 in , under the Arc de Triomphe where the flame will be taken from the tomb of the unknown soldier by around thirty Finistère college students, coming from all over the territory and educated in public, private and Diwan establishments. This flame will then be taken to Finistère during a cycling relay of a military team.

The idea comes from the Armies and the prefect who had organized a similar event in the south of France“, underlines Maël de Calan, the president of the department. “The Olympic flame attracted tens of thousands of spectators around common values, such as sport, respect and performance. Around the flame of memory there will be remembrance, respect for fighters and veterans and the awareness that we must create cohesion around our armies which are so present in Finistère.

Remember the sacrifice

This flame will then be dispersed in six locations throughout the territory. From November 26 to 29, these six emanations will begin their journey before reaching the tip of Pen Hir in Camaret-sur-Mer where the final ceremony will take place in the presence of 600 young Finisterians.

This duty to remember is essential, explains Maël de Calan, especially since during the various ceremonies – on May 8 and November 11 – the public is fewer and fewer in number. “We must therefore remind, especially young people, of the sacrifice that was made by soldiers and the meaning of this sacrifice as well as the need to remember the origin of these conflicts to try to avoid them in the future.“, he emphasizes.
