Reunion Island will have to build 172,500 housing units by 2050 according to a study just presented jointly by INSEE and DEAL. This makes an average of 5,900 housing units to be built each year, while 5,100 housing units were completed last year.

In Reunion, if demographic trends and modes of cohabitation continue, 172,500 housing units would need to be built between 2021 and 2050. This is what reveals a a study carried out jointly by INSEE and DEAL, presented this Wednesday, November 13.

The 172,500 housing units are distributed as follows:

115,000 for future needs
29,500 to meet current needs

Thus, 115,500 housing units would be necessary to support the increase in the number of households. This increase would be:

for 50% by demographic growth (+5,200 inhabitants per year)
for 33% by the reduction in the size of households linked to the evolution of cohabitation patterns (more single people, less living as a couple)
and 17% due to the aging of the population (the share of those aged 65 and over is increasing)

In addition, it would be necessary to build 27,500 additional housing units to take into account two factors:
