The mayor of Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol announces that he has cancer

The mayor of and president of the metropolis Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol announced on Wednesday November 13 that he was suffering from bladder cancer. In a press conference, he details having been diagnosed with a first tumor in early 2022he was operated on in February of that year. He benefited from an initial immunotherapy treatment lasting several months. He underwent a new operation in April 2023 for a first recurrence of several tumors. Despite a new series of immunotherapy sessions, a second recurrence appeared and a third operation was carried out in June 2024. In a few days, he will have a third cycle of immunotherapy.

Resignation ruled out

“I'm doing very well”, reassures Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who excludes resigning, explaining that he was followed in the urology department of the Rouen University Hospital by a “great and very human team”. “I’m not going to resign, I’m doing well and I’m well looked after.” He specifies that he has no metastasis: “This is the most positive news.” “The illness does not prevent me from being less present and committed, it is even the opposite”, he assures. “It increased my commitment tenfold also for fundamental reasons. These subjects are taboo and we need to talk about them more.” According to the elected official, the prevalence rate of this cancer is five times more important in Seine-Maritime than in the rest of . “This cancer has an environmental origin, it is not genetic,” he said.

A plan for metropolitan staff suffering from cancer will be put in place as part of the Movember men's cancer awareness operation.
