A transfer of patients between the Rochefort and Poitiers hospitals turned into a tragedy this Wednesday. Around two o'clock in the morning, an ambulance carrying a three-year-old child and his mother had a serious accident on the A10 motorway, near the Pamproux/Rouillé area in Deux-Sèvres.
The ambulance driver fell asleep at the wheel
The driver, aged 65, is said to have dozed off at the wheel, and the vehicle violently hit the guardrail. The child was thrown out of the ambulance in shock, and his mother also suffered serious injuries.
The young woman, aged 23, had taken her son to Rochefort hospital the day before for abdominal pain. Due to a lack of pediatric service on site, the transfer to the Poitiers University Hospital was decided. Both remain hospitalized this Wednesday morningmainly for suspected fractures, although their vital prognosis is not compromised.
The ambulance was in order
The two paramedics in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. According to the first elements of the investigation, the ambulance papers were in order. An investigation was opened, entrusted to the La-Crèche motorway platoon.
