Since the end of the World War I comes together every November 11th to honor the fighters fallen during the Great War. First a simple commemoration of theArmistice of 1918this date has become over the years a powerful symbol of memory and social cohesion. This year is no exception.

Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, went to Vernon (Eure), after a sequence a few hours earlier in Bernouville for the unveiling of a plaque in honor of Georges Clemenceau on the facade of the town hall.

Duty of memory

Arrived at 4 p.m., after a Republican welcome to elected officials including the mayor of Vernon, François Ouzilleau, Alexandre Rassaërt (president of the Department of Eure), Frédéric Duché (president of Seine Normandie Agglomération) and Nicole Duranton (senator of Eure ), the minister went to the war memorial, Place de la République, to preside over this solemn ceremony, followed by a presentation of decorations to honor those who work for the defense of France.

Sébastien Lecornu wanted to recall in his official message “the importance of the memory of the combatants, then those who fell sacrificed for the country” by laying a wreath in their memory.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, a young woman flag bearerYasmine 19 ans. A native of Vernon and a student of art history in , she has held this position for 5 years.

During a visit by the National Union of Combatants to César-Lemaître college, Yasmine volunteered to lay wreaths during the commemorative ceremonies.

“It’s a duty to remember. My great uncle fell in World War II and it remains a deep wound in my family. »
