Yvan Igouf, SNES-FSU co-secretary in Calvados, reacts to the announcements from the Minister of National Education on upcoming reforms in middle schools: compulsory certificate to move on to high school and new stage of needs groups for 4th grade students and 3rd.
The Minister of Education, Anne Genetet, announced this Tuesday, November 12, the maintenance of level groups – since renamed need groups – in middle school, in 6th and 5th grade, and their partial extension in 4th and 3rd grade. A decision which confirms its intention to continue the reform initially launched by Gabriel Attal at the end of 2023.
Yvan Igouf, SNES-FSU co-secretary in Calvados, criticizes this choice of the minister to extend a system applied in a chaotic manner since the last school year in September. The union delegate believes “that beyond the philosophical opposition of the teaching staff to this selection of students, the question of numbers and the lack of French and mathematics teachers arises”. Yvan Igouf, professor of history and geography at the Collège Villey Desmeserets in Caen, also criticizes the future obligation to obtain the national college certificate to progress to high school, general or professional.
