Why do the church bells in this village no longer ring?

The Morannes church has been closed to the public since April 2023. As our colleagues atActu.frthe elected officials of the department had taken this serious decision in order to “prevent the worsening of disorders on the elevations”. However, the bells of the monument continued to ring, to the delight of the inhabitants.

Only now, for two weeks, the bells of the religious building located in Maine-et- have no longer been ringing. This sad silence follows an accident that occurred at the end of October.

More than 800,000 euros of work

Jean-Marie Cardoën, the mayor of Morannes-sur--Daumeray, explained the incident to our colleagues: “Part of one of the four columns located at the bell tower gave way. If the part that fell fell on the roof of the church, we were forced to stop the bells. The repeated heavy vibrations could be the cause of this degradation. »

In addition, the architect in charge of the renovation work noticed significant cracks on the facade, but also inside the church. For now, the mayor is talking about a package of work estimated at more than 800,000 euros. To save the village church, classified as a Historic Monument, the town hall is multiplying the number of grant applications. Jean-Marie Cardoën hopes to be able to begin work at the end of 2025. In the meantime, the area around the church remains closed to the public.
