Currently, the firefighters of the CSP Nord-Aveyron, led by Lieutenant Serge Rieutort, are presenting their calendar and they will soon celebrate Sainte-Barbe.
This fire brigade has existed since December 1852. A name comes from the word sape, adjoining part of a house on fire, making it possible to prevent the spread to the neighborhood, supplemented by the term firefighter with the appearance of the first hand pumps , which were used by the first firefighters in the 18th century.
The first, Berthe 1, was offered in 1853 by Casimir Mayrand, whose name the Boralde barracks bears. The next one was purchased by the municipality ten years later.
The first Sainte-Barbe was celebrated in 1864. Monday May 29, 1876 was marked by a terrible tragedy, Pierre Frontin and Jean-Baptiste Cayron being burned to death in a house fire in the Moulin district. The body modernized and acquired a motor pump after the Second World War. In 1951 the barracks on Avenue de la Gare were inaugurated, and the first siren was installed there a year later with a code signaling the nature of the call: test, fire or flood. On Sunday, December 14, 1952, the Corps celebrated its centenary. The opportunity for the municipal council to pay tribute to the two firefighters who were victims of their duty, by giving their names to the Pierre Frontin and Jean-Baptiste Cayron squares.
The first professional firefighter position was assigned to sapper Dominique Fontanier on October 1, 1972. October 1, 1997 marked a crucial moment in local history, with the merger of the two Corps of Espalion and Saint-Côme-d'Olt which are installed in a new barracks, on the Boralde site.
The Saint-Côme-d'Olt Fire Brigade, for its part, was created in 1869, after several fires in the town and acquired its first pump a year later. The Nord-Aveyron CSP operates in good harmony with elements who regularly undergo training. In addition, a group of young firefighters has been created, who regularly undergo training in order to be ready to intervene when they reach the required age.
Casimir Mayrand Barracks
The Fire Brigade took possession of the Casimir Mayrand barracks, name of a former elected official of the canton, on the Boralde site, in 1997. Born March 4, 1818 in Espalion, he studied at college there, then his apprenticeship in commerce, before moving to Lyon, then Paris where he married his employer's daughter. Returning to his hometown in 1852, he built a villa in Lévinhac. He became the owner of the castles of Roquelaure and La Baume in Lozère.
General councilor for 40 years, mayor of Espalion, senator, he built the road to Entraygues, doubled the capacity of the cemetery at his own expense, provided street lights, installed fountains, created the free school, the college and the hospice, hastened the construction of the courthouse which now houses the town hall.
