This is not a trivial discovery, although not exceptional. THE Sunday November 10, 2024a dead whale was discovered stranded on a rocky islet off the coast of Réville (Manche).
According to the first findingsit would measure 7 to 10 meters long and weigh between 10 and 12 tons.
Health risks
The corpse was already well damaged. THE state services then decided toevacuate the animal very quickly.
The gas emissions linked to the decomposition of the animal near economic activities (Editor's note: the oyster beds of Saint-Vaast in particular) and close to the coast led to the decision to quickly remove the cetacean through the mobilization of a significant number of services. The speed of the operation was also justified by the weather forecasts and tide times.
After marking the carcass by a helicopter of the National Navy, a customs boatassisted by the SDIS, was mobilized to unbeach the whale.
THE mobilized personnel followed a strict protocol concerning protective measures. And finally, around 6 p.m., the whale was brought ashore at the end of the day, at the level of the way de Jonvillein Réville.
An autopsy
The animal must now be transported to a specialized site in order to carry out its autopsy.
In the days to come, analyzes will allow us to know more about the cetacean and the causes of his deathbut alsoavoid any health risk linked to the consequences of its stranding near the coast.
