The river shuttles that sailed all summer on the St. Lawrence River in eastern Montreal had a record year in terms of traffic.
According to data that TVA Nouvelles obtained from the regional metropolitan transport authority (ARTM), more than 462,000 trips were recorded, up 9% compared to 2023.
There is also a growth in interest in this mode of transport among workers, given that trips between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. have increased by 20% compared to last year.
According to the ARTM, this mode of transport is an ideal way for Montrealers to avoid traffic issues, mainly with regard to the work underway on the Louis-Hyppolite Lafontaine bridge-tunnel.
However, this alternative is not available all year round.
“What you need to know is that the shuttles, for the moment, are not winterized, therefore are not equipped to navigate in winter,” says the senior advisor for public affairs and communications of the ARTM, Simon Boiteau.
“We can think that with suitable equipment, we could offer the service much later during the winter season,” he adds.
The period of operation of the river shuttles in 2024 ran from May 18 to October 27, totaling 163 days of operation.
