How automobile scrapyards recycle electric batteries

COP29, the new climate mass, opens Monday, November 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan. How to recycle electric car batteries? Three scrapyards in have equipped themselves for this. This is the case of Gizziin Beaucaire. This automobile scrapyard has existed since 1954; today it is the two grandsons of its founder who are in charge. Electricity makes them work differently.

“Everything changes very quickly”

**The breakage Gizzi processed its first electric car in 2022. **Two years later, it is part of a national recycling network: IDRA. Jérémy Gizzi is the deputy director of the company: “We have contracts with INDRA, which allows us to collect vehicles. When we have the authorizations, we can drop off and recycle the vehicles.” This scrapyard processes five hundred cars, around fifty of which are electric. All are flocked.

Once the authorizations have been granted, the scrapyard processes the vehicle. The battery is dismantled by the two skilled workers. Jérémy Gizzi's brother, Cédric Gizzi, trained for a year for this: “It’s very technical, because it’s very risky to handle these materials, so, with a worker, we trained for a year.”, he explains. Once the battery is dismantled, it is returned to the manufacturer in a special container. At the beginning of 2025, the two brothers will inaugurate their first hangar dedicated solely to electric cars.
