Elie Califer adopts an amendment to increase aid to families

When an Ultramarine dies in , many families want his body to be buried in his territory of origin. But transporting a deceased person is very expensive. MP Elie Califer therefore had an amendment adopted, increasing by one million euros the budget for aid in the transport of bodies between France and Overseas.

Repatriating a body from France to an overseas territory costs between 3000 and 6000 euros. A considerable sum that bereaved families must bear, sometimes already facing financial difficulties. For some, this approach is impossible, given the prohibitive cost for them.

In the name of territorial continuity*, the deputy for the fourth constituency of Guadeloupe, Elie Califer, tabled, on Tuesday October 29, 2024, an amendment (n°002385) aimed at reducing inequalities between the overseas populations and those of the Hexagonal France. The text, submitted as part of the debates around the 2025 finance bill, takes into account the high costs of repatriating a remains, for burial of the deceased in their territory of origin.

It was adopted in the National Assembly.

Elie Califer considers that this is assistance that will provide relief to families, by offering them the possibility of resting their loved ones as close as possible to them.

The text asks the State to add one million euros to the budget allocated to help transport a body overseas.

The increased budget will go to the Overseas Agency for Mobility (LADOM), which will manage it.

Aid from LADOM, the amount of which is around 1000 euros, was already planned for this purpose. Its allocation was conditional on a family quotient of 11,000 euros, explains the MP. It therefore only concerned a limited number of households.

GOOD TO KNOW/
*Territorial continuity is a principle of public service. It aims to strengthen cohesion between the different territories of the same State, in particular by compensating for their distance. The overseas territories of France must benefit from the provisions provided for in this framework. This could involve, for example, financial aid for air transport, to bring overseas people closer to France.
