In the current geopolitical context, the meeting between the French Football team and that of Israel scheduled for next Thursday at the Stade de France crystallizes a number of tensions. Especially since the previous days were marked by the deployment by the Collectif Ultras Paris (CUP) of a pro-Palestinian banner and the violence which punctuated the post-match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Odoxa's latest sports barometer, produced for Winamax and RTL, is dedicated to the next match of the French team, which will return to the Stade de France against Israel. If the majority of French people (59%) predict a victory for the Blues despite the absence of Kylian Mbappé, the main thing is not on the pitch but off it.
Indeed, while voices are calling for the meeting not to take place, the meeting was indeed maintained at the Stade de France. Thus, 59% of French people do not fear that this match will “import the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to France” and 64% have confidence in the public authorities to ensure the security of the match.
In this survey, where 1,005 people representative of the French population were questioned before the scenes of violence in Amsterdam, the respondents thus validate the choices of the French Football Federation for this match. 64% of them agree with keeping the match in Saint-Denis rather than in the region and 61% validate the choice not to relocate the meeting abroad as was done for the match Belgium-Israel at the beginning of September. In addition, three quarters of those questioned think that the meeting should not take place behind closed doors but with the public.
Also, those interviewed doubt that this meeting could be an opportunity to convey messages for the ceasefire. In fact, only 44% of French people and 55% of football fans want this match to convey such a message. This idea also divides the French according to their political affiliation: if 67% of left-wing supporters are in favor of communicating messages for the ceasefire, 69% of right-wing supporters are opposed to it.
Finally, a large majority of French people refuse to boycott the meeting: only 17% of them and 18% of French people will boycott the meeting for political reasons.
