During the hearing of the criminal court ofAlençonThursday November 7, a couple was prosecuted for “unauthorized possession of an animal of a non-domestic species”.
It is in their country and forest property in Crulai (Orne) that this couple in their fortieshunting and wildlife enthusiasts, collected a male boar in January 2023 which seemed to have gotten lost. They raised him and provided him with a 1,600 m² enclosure where he lived, apparently peacefully, for more than a year.

It was during an unannounced visit in January 2024 that agents from the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB), in charge of environmental policing, discovered this young male who had become an adult and was not responding to any prerequisite rule for private detention, i.e. not castrated, not vaccinated, etc.
An impossible return to nature
Present at the hearing, the sworn agents underlined the potential danger for the neighborhood of this powerful animal but also the risks linked to the possible transmission of epidemics of swine fever and other contagious diseases which have recently appeared in Europe.
They also indicate that its breeding in daily contact with humans now makes its return to its natural environment impossible.
Animal euthanized, unless…
Without calling into question either the good will or the good faith of the defendants who have never had to deal with justice, the court declares them guilty and sentences them to follow a citizenship course.
He further orders that, unless a regulatory solution is found to have him admitted to an animal park, the animal is euthanized.
