The National Integrated Waste Management Company (SONAGED) aims to establish itself as a key player in the circular economy on the world stage. Present at the Ecomondo Show, one of the largest events dedicated to ecological innovations, this Senegalese public company wishes to attract strategic partnerships and strengthen the visibility of its environmental initiatives. Khalifa Ababacar Sarr, general director of SONAGED, underlined this vision by affirming that “SONAGED is positioning itself to become an essential pillar of the circular economy in Senegal, and this show is an opportunity to strengthen our international influence”.
An international partnership to promote Senegalese expertise
As part of this ambition, SONAGED has formed a partnership with the organizers of the Ecomondo Show in order to promote its expertise and attract potential partners to Senegal. Khalifa Sarr explains that this partnership aims to publicize Senegal’s progress in sustainable waste management, while raising awareness among international investors of development opportunities in this sector in Senegal. “This partnership allows SONAGED to promote our expertise while drawing the attention of visitors and partners to the potential of the Senegalese sector,” he said.
A growing network of partnerships to develop the circular economy in Senegal
In order to accelerate the development of the circular economy, SONAGED is increasing contacts and collaborations. The company has already initiated strategic relationships during previous editions of the Ecomondo Fair, and it continues to make contacts this year to explore partnerships with various countries, including Serbia, which presents innovative solutions such as waste management infrastructure.
Khalifa Ababacar Sarr underlined the importance of these partnerships to support Senegal’s ecological policies. “We want to capitalize on our presence here to boost Senegal’s environmental vision, in accordance with the authorities’ directives. Partnerships with industries could create jobs and strengthen the recycling industry in Senegal,” he added.
Job creation and industrial development: a potential of 40,000 jobs
The development of a circular economy also represents a crucial opportunity for job creation. Mr. Sarr estimates that SONAGED could generate up to 40,000 jobs if partnerships with waste management industries are successful. Currently, the company employs around 16,000 people, but thanks to growth prospects in the waste sector, this figure could more than double, supporting Senegal’s anti-unemployment policy.
Towards the development of local waste management infrastructures
To support its objectives, SONAGED plans to expand its network of waste treatment centers in the 46 departments of Senegal. The organization of this infrastructure would not only reduce the unemployment rate, but also respond more effectively to the waste management needs of local communities. According to Mr. Sarr, strengthening SONAGED’s presence at the national level would help meet the growing demand for efficient waste management and encourage the adoption of circular economy practices.
A promising future for the circular economy in Senegal
The Ecomondo Exhibition, which takes place from November 5 to 8, 2024 in Rimini, Italy, is a key platform for strengthening cooperation between companies and promoting innovative ecological initiatives. SONAGED’s participation in this international event positions Senegal as a pioneer in the circular economy in West Africa. By investing in sustainable solutions and establishing strategic partnerships, SONAGED actively contributes to the green industrialization of Senegal, while supporting job creation and sustainable development.
