François-Noël Buffet highlights the importance of economic development in Mayotte – LINFO.re

A month and a half after his arrival at the post, François-Noël Buffet, the new Minister of Overseas Territories, was heard on Thursday, November 7 by the senatorial delegation dedicated to Overseas Territories. He took the opportunity to detail his priorities and present his roadmap.

He announced the holding of an Interministerial Overseas Committee (CIOM) in March 2025, regretting that parliamentarians were not consulted during the last session. The minister highlighted local emergencies, including the cost of living in and the damage in New Caledonia.

He wants an approach based on dialogue and adaptation to local particularities, in particular for construction standards and housing. Finally, he insisted on the need to stimulate employment and value creation, in order to reduce unemployment gaps, which reach high levels in certain territories such as Mayotte.

François-Noël Buffet presented its priorities for the next CIOM, focusing its action on food sovereignty, ecological transition, innovation and support for young people. It proposes increasing local agricultural production and structuring the sectors to ensure sustainable food independence. In ecological matters, he wants to accelerate decarbonization in the face of the climatic challenges to which the territories are exposed. For innovation, it plans to rely on 2030 and strengthen infrastructure through development contracts. Buffet also discussed access to water, housing, health and employment.
