“We are getting closer to the record of the longest period without sun in the Breton capital”, indicates to news Rennes Sébastien Decauxmeteorologist at Météo Bretagne. Since October 31, the city did not experience a single hour of sunshine. In Nantes, this has been the case since October 29. “So we are in the ninth consecutive day without having seen the sun appear. However, if we want to be exact, Rennes join me minute of sunshineTuesday November 5, but it was just a brighter moment »deciphers Sébastien Decaux.
On Saturday, the sky should remain the same. It is very likely that we will equal the record of 10 days without sun in Rennes, which dates from December 28, 2010 to January 8, 2011. Previously, the same record dated from December 1956.
How to explain it?
This sad weather is linked to the “frozen anticyclonic situation” in the sky. “The grayness does not dissipate, because there is not enough sun because of the layer of stratus clouds which are 200 to 300 meters thick,” explains Sébastien Decaux.
We crossed the autumnal equinox on September 21. From then on, the sun shines more light on the southern hemisphere. It is therefore lower in the sky and has less energy. Its heating power is therefore limited. It no longer warms the air enough to dissipate the clouds, in addition to the lack of wind. Which leads to the formation of a bell which can no longer release moisture, hence the mist and fog.
Soon the sun will return?
Can the weather change to let the sun reappear in the coming days? “In the short term, no”decides the meteorologist.
On Saturday, the weather will still be similar to recent days: “Sunday, a very attenuated disturbance could bring some light rain. For Monday, we are again in anticyclonic conditions. »
Drop in temperatures
The anticyclone is expected to be even more powerful in the coming days. Sébastien Decaux does not see a sunny period arriving yet, even if some clearings could be distinguished in beginning of next week with a north-northeast sector flow.
This flow will, however, result in a drop in temperatures. “We should go below 5°C in the mornings. We will have minimums and maximums slightly lower than seasonal norms. “
After a record period, a record month of November?
The meteorologist from Météo Bretagne insists on the sunshine meter monitoring throughout the month of November. “Last February we experienced a historically dark month, with only 38.9 hours of sunshine in Rennes. THE previous record dated November 1992 with 46.5 hours of sunshine. We will therefore have to look at what this month of November brings and if it does not break this record. For now, we are at zero hours,” he warns.
What are the consequences of lack of sunlight?
This lack of sunlight can have repercussions. “Mainly a lack of vitamin D and a drop in people's moraleknowing that the month of November generally sees a sharp decrease in light. So, with the covered sky, the intensity of the effects can be significant. »
