You may have noticed a change in the color of the Meuse, in the Mouzon sector in the Ardennes, this Friday, November 8, 2024. This is explained by pollution of accidental origin, after approximately two tons of latex Liquid leaked from the Adler Pelzer factory, a nearby automotive supplier. This pollution, clearly visible, currently extends over nearly 2,000 meters along the watercourse.
State services and firefighters intervened quickly to manage the situation. The authorities assure that there is no direct risk to human health, which has led to not installing absorbent devices, as latex is miscible in water. Although no fish mortality has been observed so far, certain species could be vulnerable to this type of product, which has potentially toxic characteristics.
To assess the environmental impact, agents from the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) took samples this afternoon. These analyzes will make it possible to better understand the effects of this pollution on the aquatic environment.
As a precautionary measure, the prefect of the Ardennes has issued an order prohibiting, until November 24, 2024, the consumption of fish caught between Mouzon and Givet. This decision aims to limit the risks for consumers, while awaiting the results of the analyzes and the return to a normal situation in the Meuse.
