Susan Eisenhower follows in the footsteps of her grandfather during a day of commemorations

Friday November 8, 2024a day of special commemorations is organized around Granville (Manche), at the initiative of Jean-Louis Dumetzpresident of the Patton Fondation for . Initially, Helen Patton, granddaughter of General George Patton, was also invited, but she was unable to attend due to health reasons.

For the first stage of this day, General Eisenhower's granddaughter was received at the town hall of Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, in the presence of elected officials and veterans. Alain Bachelierthe mayor, after giving a summary of the operations carried out by General Eisenhower in the South Channel, wanted to recall the links which unite the region with the United States.

A Relationship also highlighted by Pierre Chauleursub-prefect of Avranches. “There is a unwavering link between the USA and the English Channel and what I particularly appreciate is this fidelity in memory,” he expressed.

Susan Eisenhower then spoke. “It is with great humility that I am here to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landing. This common war constituted the foundation of a special relationship between our two peoples,” declared the granddaughter of the American General.

This day offers me the opportunity to discover this region and see the kindness of its inhabitants. My grandfather was also very well received by the local population. My family does not forget him and the American nation does not forget him either.

The day will continue with a visit to the villa Montgomeryin Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, where General Eisenhower stayed in August and September 1944. Susan Eisenhower then went to Mare Castlein Jullouville, where the headquarters of the allied forces was located, to lay a wreath.

The procession will then head towards Granville to salute a project to update drawings made by American soldiers at the covered market. The day will end at Sainte-Mère-Église, where Susan Eisenhower is expected to give two conferences.
