Presentation of the observation system for the Carnac megalith site and the southern banks of Morbihan

As part of the project to register the megaliths of Carnac and the southern banks of Morbihan as UNESCO world heritage sites, the Tourist Development Agency (ADT), in collaboration with local stakeholders (Centre of National Monuments, Landscapes de Mégalithes, AQTA, GMVA), has set up a complete attendance observation system. This system aims to monitor the evolution of attendance and assess the impact of different parameters on megalithic sites, by providing reliable quantitative and qualitative data. This data allows those responsible for managing and running the sites to make informed decisions.

The observation system includes several components:

  • Observation quantitative et qualitative of tourist and excursionist attendance throughout the territory.
  • Specific monitoring of the emblematic site of Carnacwhere visitor flows are particularly concentrated.
  • Analysis of ticketing of paid sites (tables des Marchands, Gavrinis, Petit Mont), which makes it possible to collect additional data on attendance.
  • Monitoring attendance at the Maison des Mégalithes a you Carnac Prehistory Museum.

The tool Flux Vision plays a key role in leveraging data from mobile telephony to provide real-time information on visitor flows. Used since 2015, this tool makes it possible to monitor attendance in several areas of the territory (department of Morbihan, AQTA, GMVA, PNR, etc.), with a specific observation zone recently added for the Carnac Alignements, in order to ensure even more precise monitoring. Orange Flux Vision thus makes it possible to monitor annual attendance, obtain reactive data on attendance and know the origin of visitors (tourists, day trippers, residents, geographical origins, etc.).

Finally, to strengthen this system, ADT worked in partnership with the company Affluences to set up a real-time monitoring system for attendance at the Carnac alignments. Concretely, four autonomous thermal sensors were installed on the site in order to capture this data continuously.
