On October 31, in Pont-Saint-Esprit, Ibrahim, an asylum seeker from Sudan, was arrested drunk for causing public nuisance, before biting a gendarme during his arrest. This Monday, November 4, the 25-year-old man appeared before the Nîmes criminal court, where he explained his action as a pain reflex, while affirming that he never had the intention of causing harm.
The events took place in the evening, when Ibrahim, noisy and disruptive, caused inconvenience to passers-by with his loud music and his insults. As Midi-Libre reports, alerted, a gendarmerie team intervened to apprehend him. The man, particularly agitated, resisted his arrest, struggling violently and trying to escape. It was in this context that once handcuffed and installed in the police vehicle, he grabbed the leg of one of the gendarmes and inflicted a bite on the inner side of the thigh.
During his trial, Ibrahim explained: “I was radiated with pain. I had a serious injury to my arm. When the gendarmes manipulated my head to get me into the car, I was radiated with pain. So, out of reflex, I bit his leg. But I didn't want to harm him in any way! “
The injured gendarme, attached to the Bagnols-sur-Cèze company, did not attend the hearing. However, he expressed his pain in writing, with a medical certificate confirming a bruising type bite injury to the thigh.
In response to the facts, prosecutor Galtier requested a sentence of 10 months' imprisonment, as well as a ban on staying in Pont-Saint-Esprit for three years. The defense lawyer, Me Bargeton, stressed that his client, with no criminal record, had acted under the influence of alcohol and fully admitted the facts. He pleaded for a simple suspended sentence, given the absence of a criminal record.
The court finally sentenced Ibrahim to 10 months in prison, accompanied by a ban on staying on French territory for 10 years. Returned to detention, the person concerned now has 10 days to appeal this decision.
