Workers made an astonishing discovery on a construction site in Saint-Louis (Haut-Rhin) on Tuesday October 29, 2024. They were digging using a machine when they uncovered several human skulls and bones, reports France Blue Alsace in an article published Tuesday, November 5.
Called to the site, police officers from the city police station identified the human remains on this land where a seven-story building with social housing is to be built, on behalf of the town hall.
The bones could be 8,000 years old
According to a member of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (Drac) of the Grand-Est, these remains could come from a silo burial dating from the Neolithic or the Iron Age. In other words: they could be 8,000 years old.
These archaeological finds were sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Strasbourg for examination. Excavations must now be carried out on this site intended to accommodate a seven-story building. The construction site will remain shut down for several weeks.
