Prefect of Pyrénées-Atlantiques since October 2022, Julien Charles, 49, was appointed prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis by the Council of Ministers this Wednesday, November 6.
Born in 1975 in Saint-Flour, in Cantal, Julien Charles graduated with a degree in history from Sciences Po and Ena (René Cassin promotion, 2001-2003, the same as the new prefect of Val-de -Marl).
In the spring of 2003, he went to the prefecture in the Center region, as project manager to the prefect. In March 2005, he was appointed chief of staff to the prefect of the Lorraine region.
In 2007, he left for the Ministry of the Interior as a civil administrator in the Directorate of Territorial Administration Management (Dmat) before returning to the prefecture as secretary general, in Charente Maritime, in November 2009. He returned to the Dmat as deputy director in 2012, before being appointed secretary general of the Yvelines prefecture in September 2014. He was then secretary general for regional affairs in Ile-de-France from September 2018 to August 2020, when he became prefect of Saône-et-Loire. Since October 2022, he has been prefect of the Pyrénées Atlantiques.
At the head of the Seine-Saint-Denis prefecture, Julien Charles succeeds Jacques Witkowski, appointed prefect of the Grand Est region at the beginning of October.
