At the beginning of November, shootings against a backdrop of drug trafficking increased in France, notably in Poitiers (Vienna), where a 15-year-old teenager was shot and killed, or in Valence (Drôme), where a young person just of age suffered the same fate. A critical situation which led Bruno Retailleau to denounce the « mexicanisation » of the country during his trip to Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) last week. And many French people agree with the tenant of Place Beauvau….
According to a survey by the CSA institute for Le JDD, CNews and Europe 1, carried out on a representative national sample of 1,010 people, 71% of respondents believe that France is indeed on the path to « mexicanisation » in view of the explosion of violence and drug trafficking. Although it is the majority among both sexes, in detail, this point of view is shared more by women (72%) than by men (68%).

Largely the majority in all age groups (63% among those under 25), this finding peaks among those over 50 (76%). In terms of socio-professional categories, it is almost as much shared by the CSP+ (67%) as by the CSP- (71%) and the inactive (73%).

Considering their political affinities, without much surprise, supporters of the National Rally (94%) and the Republican Right – formerly LR – (91%) almost unanimously denounce the phenomenon, much more than those of Emmanuel Macron – of which more half (60%) still make the same observation.
More surprising: all parties combined, 52% of supporters of the New Popular Front deplore a « mexicanisation » of France. If the result of the survey turns out to be lower among supporters of the Ecologists (42%) than among their counterparts from the Socialist Party (52%), it reaches 57% among those of La France insoumise. Proof of a gap between left-wing politicians and their base?
