Nationally, this rate is 10.6, or 271,000 victims. A figure up 10% compared to 2022, but this increase is less significant than in previous years. “However, the evolution of the number of victims recorded by the security forces does not directly reflect the evolution of delinquency because it also reflects that of the propensity to file complaints.“, specifies the ministry's report. If it notes a freeing of speech, it rather seems to encourage former victims to come forward, with an increase in complaints for events that occurred at least a year earlier.

The victims recorded in 2023 are 85% women, the vast majority French, even if the share of foreign victims (15%) is twice as high as the share of foreigners living in France. The perpetrators of this violence are 86% men and 83% French nationals. Two thirds of the incidents reported concern physical violence, the rest being verbal or psychological violence. For 2% of victims, the events led to suicide or a suicide attempt. The ministry also recorded 115 domestic homicides and 437 attempted domestic homicides in 2023.
