It was Monday October 28 that a tragedy took place off the coast of Vendée, not far from Les Sables-d'Olonne. The victim, a 48-year-old man, was seriously injured by a shot during a spearfishing trip, reported The Parisian. Despite rescue attempts and the responsiveness of emergency services,
the forty-year-old succumbed to his injuries before he could even be transported to the hospital.
The Sables-d'Olonne public prosecutor's office took up the case in May and
ordered the opening of an investigation in order to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy. The maritime gendarmerie brigade was therefore contacted and began to question the people present during the accident.
The man was allegedly the victim of an accidental shooting
The second participant, for his part, is suspected of being responsible for the shooting. Very shocked by the events, he was taken care of by the emergency services. From now on, investigators will have to determine whether the shooting was the consequence of a lack of vigilance or an unfortunate combination of circumstances.
This man could thus be the subject of an open judicial investigation and be accused of involuntary manslaughter. If he were to be tried, he could face up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros. If, in addition, investigators prove that there was a deliberate lack of caution or safety, the sentence could be up to five years' imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros.
