In his Janailhac field, Clément Gizardin, a farmer, has bad memories of the accusations made against him by investigators from the French Biodiversity Office.
“We were shocked to know that there were thresholds exceeded in the water catchment, defends Clément Gizardin. We have never had any information from anyone regarding these product thresholds in the catchment. We got them now, along with the OFB agents.”
The pesticide concerned is metolachlor. In 2023, during the checks which revealed its presence, the authorized threshold was 0.1 micrograms per liter; since then, this threshold has been raised to 0.9 micrograms per liter. Today, the latest analyzes transmitted by the ARS show a rate of 0.36 micrograms per liter, which causes the incomprehension of the president of the Chamber of Agriculture of Haute-Vienne.
“Let us have proof that the metabolites have been found and that they are at a critical threshold which allows the water to not be drinkable. We are impatiently waiting for that. If ever we had farmers audition too for a long time when there was no need to do so, there is a huge failure.”, storm Bertrand Venteau, the president of the Chamber of Agriculture of Haute-Vienne.
In any case, traces of pesticides are still present in the catchment points, but nothing to worry about according to the mayor of Janailhac.
Regular health checks are organized by the Regional Health Agency on water and comply with the quality requirements in force and therefore suitable for consumption. So, drinkable water.
Philippe Devarissias, maire (SE) of Janailhac
The investigation to find the origin of the pesticides continues. It is the regional environment center at the Limoges public prosecutor's office which will have to establish responsibilities.
