Domestic violence is clearly increasing in France. According to figures published this Wednesday, November 6, by the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI), attached to the Ministry of the Interior, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region is particularly affected by domestic violence.

The Alpes-Maritimes department is the sixth in France to have the most victims of domestic violence by their partner or ex-partner. In 2023, there would be more than 13 victims of domestic violence per 1,000 inhabitants aged 15 to 64. Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is in eleventh place in the ranking among French departments, and Bouches-du-Rhône is in twentieth place.

Pas-de-, Réunion, and are among the most affected departments in France. They already recorded the highest rate in 2022.

The Pas-de-Calais department records 15.2 victims in 2023 per 1,000 inhabitants, the highest rate in France, followed by the neighboring Nord department at 14.5.

In 2023, the security services, based on crimes recorded by the police and the gendarmerie, recorded 271,000 victims of domestic violence. An increase of 10% compared to the year 2022. “In a context of freedom of speech and improvement in the reception conditions for victims by the police and gendarmerie services, the number of registered victims has doubled since 2016“, details the SSMI.

The vast majority of victims are women, 85%, most aged between 20 and 45.

Depending on the types of violence recorded, 64% concern physical violence, 31% verbal or psychological violence and 4% sexual violence.

Among all victims of domestic violence, only 14% of them file a complaint with the security services.

Domestic violence is punishable by law. Those accused risk up to 3 years in prison and a €45,000 fine, and for aggravating circumstances, up to five years in prison and a €75,000 fine.
