This meeting made it possible to address strategic and priority subjects for the territory, particularly in terms of development educational, social inclusion and support for young Reunion Islanders. The discussion highlighted the challenges facing Reunion Island, such as housing insecurity, youth insecurity, and parenting issues. The issue of the high poverty rate, as well as our ability to integrate population movements into the social fabric of the island, were also addressed. The need for a holistic approach, integrating all stakeholders, to meet the specific needs of families and young people in vulnerable situations was highlighted.
The meeting between the president of the departmental council and the rector served as a reminder of the importance of professional integration for young people from Reunion. The Rector expressed his desire to strengthen partnerships with local stakeholders in order to improve support for young people in their integration process. The Department and the Academy thus share a common objective: to offer them stable and lasting future prospects.
The subject of supporting students with disabilities was also at the heart of the discussions, with a focus on the central role of the Departmental House for Disabled People (MDPH) in supporting the families and students concerned. The Rectorate is committed to working closely to optimize MDPH processing times for the educational and professional inclusion of young people with disabilities. This shared priority aims to guarantee better accessibility to rights and support adapted to the specific needs of users, thus strengthening inclusion and social cohesion on the island.
While the promotion of short circuits and local products in school catering were discussed to promote eating well, the island economy and the preservation of the environment, Cyrille Melchior and Rostane Mehdi stressed the need to adapt the offer educational to local realities, demographic developments and infrastructure needs, particularly in terms of sectorization, rehabilitation and construction of colleges.
Finally, the ambition of the departmental project to create the Citizen Institute for Learning in Public Life (ICAP) was mentioned. This project aims to strengthen the links between Reunion youth and citizenship, by offering them training and learning adapted to island realities. The Rector, convinced of the importance of this project, is committed to supporting it.
The president of the Department and the rector of the Academy of La Réunion are committed to strengthening their cooperation to respond to the educational and social challenges of the region.
