Israeli-Swiss actor Yan Balistoy has filed a complaint against the Neumarkt Theater in Zurich for violating the anti-racist criminal standard. He blames the management for preventing him from playing with a Lebanese actress.
The criminal complaint filed with the Zurich-Limmat Public Prosecutor’s Office is directed against the chairman of the board of directors, the three directors and the playwright of this prestigious Alemannic stage. Sacha Wigdorovits, communications manager for Yan Balistoy, released a press release on Sunday at the actor’s request.
The theater management would have acted following the protest of the Lebanese actress. Yan Balistoy should have played with her during certain performances. “This is how she publicly imposes the discriminatory and anti-Semitic law of the terrorist Hezbollah militia on the stage of the Neumarkt Theater,” the statement said.
Lebanese law
Those in charge of the theater would have justified the measure by a law promulgated by Lebanon which prohibits its nationals from maintaining relations with Israeli Jews. This boycott is supposed to ensure the safety of Lebanese actors and their families living in the country.
“The application in Switzerland of an anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic Lebanese law violates the Federal Constitution,” adds the actor’s spokesperson. This text prohibits discriminating against people because of their origin, religion or gender.
Added to this is the fact that the theater management has publicly communicated its decision to only have Yan Balistoy perform in half of its plays. A message to this effect on Instagram was cited by numerous media in Switzerland. The actor therefore filed an additional complaint for defamation.
