An accident involving a heavy goods vehicle occurred this Monday, November 4, 2024 on the A83 motorway towards Nantes, leading to the temporary closure of the road and significant slowdowns. The driver, a 56-year-old man, lost control of his 44-ton truck near the town of Pouillé, in Vendée, causing the vehicle to overturn on the road.
Spectacular accident: the highway cut
According to France Bleu, the incident took place around 2:30 p.m. For reasons still undetermined, the truck left its trajectory and lay down, blocking the emergency lane as well as the right lane. Faced with the congestion caused by this accident, Vinci, the highway manager, decided to cut the A83 from exit 71, Fontenay-Ouest, causing several kilometers of slowdowns.
Rapid emergency intervention
Thirteen firefighters from the Fontenay-le-Comte, Sainte-Hermine, Nalliers and La Roche-sur-Yon barracks were mobilized to intervene on the site. They took care of the driver, who was slightly injured according to an initial assessment. The latter was transported to the Luçon hospital center for additional examinations.
Traffic partly restored in the evening
The highway remained closed until 8:40 p.m., forcing motorists to follow a diversion route. At the start of the evening, traffic was able to partially resume on the left lane. However, the operations of clearing and evacuating the pallets transported by the heavy goods vehicle required the intervention of teams throughout the night.
